The Fibre Co. Waves Collection [6 Shawl Patterns]
The Waves Collection is a collaboration between The Fibre Co and three independent designers each known for their beautiful shawl designs; Melanie Berg, Helen Stewart and Hiroko Payne. Each designer contributed two designs to the collection. It was showcased for the first time last weekend at Edinburgh Yarn Festival. I was lucky enough to see the samples in person and oh boy they were stunning!
The collection is inspired by water. Each designer has interpreted this through the use of different stitch patterns, texture and colour in their shawls. There's a feeling of movement through the different stitches; of waves lapping on the shoreline and boats causing ripples in the sea.
Each design has used Road to China, a luxurious blend of cashmere, camel, baby alpaca and silk. It is kettle dyed to give colours are complex and deeply saturated. The different fibres take the dye differently which gives a depth of colour with subtle heathered tones. It knits up a dream with a soft halo which allows shows off the stitches and texture beautifully.
ARMADALE
Armadale requires four colours of Road to China Light, the original sample was knit in Grey Pearl, Carnelian, Smoky Quartz and Moonstone. For the main colour you'll need two skeins and then one skein each of the three contrasting colours.
For an alternative colour combination how about taking a leaf of lovely Jill's book who was one of Melanie's test knitters. Jill used Riverstone, Agate, Apatite and Blue Tourmaline.
FALLS OF FOYERS
Knit in garter stitch and edged with a lace border which is finished off with a picot cast off, Melanie Berg's Falls of Foyer has been knit in Road to China Light in the colour Hematite, it requires five skeins.
KELSO SHAWL
Helen Stewart's shawl Kelso uses three colours of Road to China Light, she chose Blue Tourmaline as her main colour and Lapis and Ametrine as her contrasting colours. Whilst Helen's test knitter knit her shawl in Rhodolite, Sapphire and Hematite. To knit Kelso you need one skein of the main colour and two each of your contrasting colours.
TOBERMORY SHAWL
Tobermory is perhaps my favourite shawl from the collection. I love Helen Stewarts choice of colours, she has used Carnelian as her main colour and Sapphire as her contrast colour. To knit Tobermory, you'll need two skeins of the main colour and one of the contrasting colour.
Helen's test knitter Deb opted for a monochrome colour combination for her shawl with Hematite and Grey Pearl, I think it's stunning!

LINGHOLM & PORTINSCALE
Hiroko Payne knows her stuff when it comes to creating beautiful lace shawls. Lingholm is for the more experienced lace knitter. It has been knit in Road to China Lace in the colour Star Lemon and requires two skeins.
Portinscale is another of Hiroko's shawls, again knit in Road to China Lace this time using just one skein and shown here in the colour Blue Opal. Portinscale is suitable for an intermediate knitter.
